Slips and Falls in the Bathroom Can Lead to Serious Injury or Death
In recent news, a nine-year-old boy in Texas drowned in the shower and passed away on September 24, 2022. The Police found the boy with his grandfather, who was trying to revive him via CPR on the site.
The child was in the shower shortly before his grandfather found him on the floor. He was taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Several accidents can occur due to slips and falls in the bathroom. Usually, younger children and senior adults are at high risk of falling.
CDC on Bathroom Falls and Injuries
According to CDC’s
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), one in four adults reportedly fell and suffered from injuries from 2012 to 2018 alone. Adults over age 65 are most susceptible to falls in the bathroom or other places for various reasons.
Consider these statistics per the report:
- Two hundred thirty-four thousand people over 15 were treated for bathroom-related accidents.
- Four out of five people were brought in due to fall-related injuries.
- 30% of injured individuals were over 65 years old.
- 38% of 85-year-olds were also hospitalized due to these injuries.
How to Prevent Slips and Falls in the Shower
Every year we have many incidents of death and serious injuries due to slips and falls in the shower. Here are a few tips to help make your bathroom safe for the young and old:
Use Non-Slip Surfaces
Since most accidents occur due to slipping, it is recommended to use nonslip flooring and rugs.
Use Slip Resistant Mats
The only mats you should allow are anti-slip. They should be kept outside the door and bathtub. Waterproof mats can also be used inside the shower.
Keep the Place Dry
Install shower curtains or doors so the rest of the bathroom remains dry after showering.
Accessible Toiletries
All toiletries should be kept within reach. This way, you won't have to stand on your toes to reach them, reducing the chances of slipping and falling.
Remove Obstacles
Clear the place and remove all extra items and accessories in the bathroom. Let go of all things that could lead to a fall.
Install Toilets at a Comfortable Height
If a toilet is too high or low, it may be difficult for some to climb on and off the seat. A stool can also make it easier for children to access the toilet.
Work on the Lighting
Lighting is important, especially during the nighttime. You need night lights to avoid accidents and falls.
Shower Installation
Consider installing hand showers or adjustable shower heads. This way, you can also control the water flow more easily.
Supervise Young Children
Do not let little children shower alone without adult supervision.
Check Water Temperature
Check the water temperature before letting a child go in. Install anti-scald devices on faucets to prevent burning accidents.
Keep Electrical Cords Out of the Way
Keep all cords and wires out of the way. They can lead to tripping and falls, especially at night.
Shower Door
If the shower door is made of glass, it should be shatterproof. Always install high-quality materials. Even if it raises the costs, it's worth saving a life.
